Reward offered by SACPA for information

The Southern Arizona Cattlemens Protection Association is offering $1500 for information on the person(s) who shot and slaughtered a steer Jan. 4, on a ranch about 11 miles southeast of Patagonia.  

This is only one of several slaughtering incidents that have occured in the Sahuarita and Nogales area in the last several months.

Rosemont Mine commenting period ends today

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now)- Tuesday, Jan. 31 is the last call for comments on the proposed rosemont copper mine project.

The forest service extended the timeline due to a technical problem with their email account.

The problem happened Jan. 18 when some comments weren't delivered.

Those who still wish to voice their opinion on the environmental impact of the mine have until the end of the day.

You can go online to the Coronado National Forest Service web site to submit your comment.

DPS ends I-19 safety patrols over manpower issues

GREEN VALLEY, AZ - Operation Guardian Angel, a safe-driving campaign launched in July to reduce fatalities along Interstate 19, came to a quiet end recently after staffing shifts and a series of incidents elsewhere compelled DPS officials to re-evaluate resources.

The campaign appeared to be effective. Of 12 fatal collisions along the 63-mile, Tucson-to-Nogales interstate in 2011, nine occurred between January and July.

State Department of Public Safety spokesman Raul Molina said the campaign is largely responsible for the marked decline.

School locks down as illegal immigrants pass by

GREEN VALLEY, AZ - Continental School campus on Whitehouse Canyon Road was locked down for about 15 minutes Wednesday after a physical education teacher with students outdoors noticed a group of illegal immigrants near the property about noon.

Superintendent Virginia Juettner said the lockdown and calls to the Pima County Sheriff and Border Patrol were precautionary. The teacher sent the children inside and kept an eye on the group.

La Posada concerts list announced

In its third year, La Posada’s annual “Concerts for…” music series returns this February to provide live, local music and family fun while raising much needed funds for a community nonprofit organization. This year, all proceeds from the six-part concert series will benefit Valley Assistance Services.

This year’s Concerts for Valley Assistance Services series will kick off on Saturday, Feb. 11, from noon to 2 p.m., in The Shoppes at La Posada courtyard

Comment period for Rosemont Mine extend

Due to a technical problem, the email set up to receive comments about the proposed Rosemont Copper Mine project rejected some for a brief period on Wednesday.

The forest service has extended the formal coment period through January 31.
